Surface Design Laser Cut Sample

 


For my laser cut I decided to use wood even though I wanted color for my piece because I would not be able to achieve different layers to the degree I would want. I would like to do this laser cut again now that I know what certain intensities look like on this wood. I was kind of guessing the values for the layers and it worked out mostly but the flower in the middle would pop more if I used a larger range of intensities for the added contrast.



I will probably use this as a coaster for now but I would like to keep exploring laser cutting using different materials and designs

Surface Design

 References Process I was creating random shapes in class and made a document of just shapes that I liked so I could use it as a library if I wanted. This was helpful with creating an outline and filling negative space. I was wanting to make my surface design to be like a stamp or brand, rather then a pattern. I took inspiration of a oni mask and using the sun and the moon as a way of contrast.  I choose the colors for the oni mask before anything as I wanted specific colors for it and contrasted the rest of the design based off of the mask. I did put it in a pattern after I finished the design and did not like how it looked this way as it had so much negative space and the detail from the oni mask was getting lost in the piece.
